Leeds 3 – 7 Nottingham ENGLAND: Championship

Nottingham Forest’s Garath McCleary struck four times as Leeds conceded seven goals at home for the first time.

Robert Snodgrass put Leeds ahead with an early penalty but Forest hit back with goals from Adlene Guedioura, McCleary and Dexter Blackstock.

Luciano Becchio and Michael Brown pulled Leeds level only for McCleary to strike three times in the space of 15 minutes to stun the home side.

Blackstock struck his side’s seventh to help Forest’s battle against the drop.

Forest manager Steve Cotterill labelled his side’s win an “unbelievable game” as they astonishingly scored seven times against a Leeds defence who had conceded just a miserly two in five games since Neil Warnock took charge.

But there was little sign of things to come when Ross McCormack was brought down by Guedioura and Snodgrass scored from the spot to put Leeds ahead after just six minutes.

The home side barely had time to celebrate before on-loan midfielder Guedioura atoned for his mistake by producing a stunning 35-yard strike to equalise.

Winger McCleary, who went into the match with nine goals in 117 games, had proved a constant threat to Leeds and put the visitors ahead as he finished off a Forest counter-attack with a right-foot shot just before the break.

Leeds were booed off at half-time and they did little to appease their fans when Blackstock headed in an Andy Reid cross to extend Forest’s lead.

Becchio slotted in and Brown produced a half-volley to level for Leeds with two goals in as many minutes but the home side soon let their good work go to waste.

The Leeds defence was proving vulnerable and McCleary took advantage with three goals in quick succession.

He latched on to a Blackstock flick to drill in a shot, slotted in an effort after being set up by Reid and produced a measured finish to take his tally to four for the game.

Forest had been on the end of 4-0 and 4-1 drubbings from Leeds in the two prior fixtures but they gained retribution in emphatic manner when Blackstock scored a seventh.

Despite the defeat, Leeds remain five points from the play-off zone, while Forest are seven points above the relegation zone.

Leeds United manager Neil Warnock:

“I’m quite embarrassed about the result.

“But I don’t think you learn much about your players when you’re winning games, I think you learn things when things go against you, who stands up and who you want in the trenches with you.

“I’ve learnt probably more than I have in the other games, but in fairness some of them were just shattered.”

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cotterill:

“Garath McCleary comes from non-league. He’s a special talent, he’s raw, he’s got two good feet, he can head it, he’s strong. I think he can go on to be even better, I think he’s a top lad.

“It was a stunning game, I know we’ve won but Leeds United played their part as well. Our chances went in, but they played their part.

“I thought it was an outstanding game by both teams. We’re very pleased with the three points more than anything else, but to play in the manner we’ve played, we’ve done that a lot this season and ended up losing 1-0 so maybe it’s evened out a little bit.”

Lionel Messi breaks Barcelona goal-scoring record

Lionel Messi has broken Barcelona’s 60-year-old goal-scoring record with a hat-trick in a 5-3 win over Granada at the Nou Camp in La Liga on Tuesday.

Messi equalled the record with a volley off a post in the 17th minute and broke the record with a lob over the goalkeeper in the 68th minute.

The Argentine’s third goal came four minutes from time when he rounded the keeper after a pass from Dani Alves.

His record target was revised down to 232 from 235 after a newspaper study.

Barcelona’s Centre of Documentation and Studies and La Vanguardia newspaper conducted joint research to verify the scoring record of previous record-holder Cesar Rodriguez in the 1950s.

The study showed he had scored three goals fewer than was previously thought.

The club had said: “It’s worth noting that Cesar Rodriguez is the club’s all-time top goalscorer in official matches, but the absolute record belongs to Paulino Alcantara, who scored 369 goals in 357 official and friendly matches.”

Messi, the 24-year-old World Player of the Year, who is in his eighth season with Barca, has now scored 54 goals in all competitions this season.

He is also now the top-scorer in La Liga this season with 34 goals from 27 games, two ahead of Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo. Athletico Madrid’s Falcao is third with 17 goals.

“We have to congratulate Messi, he has scored so many goals and is only 24, he does not just score ordinary goals but great goals and we hope he gets lots more for us, we can compare him perhaps the Michael Jordan [American basketball legend] of football,” said Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.

“There are no players capable of dominating a sport with such superiority. In every sport there has existed only one player that can be considered as somebody unique. And this is the case. Yes, Messi can be compared to Michael Jordan.”

Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdez said of his team-mate: “Messi is defining an era. He is the best.”

He set the new record in Barcelona’s win over Granada which moves the Catalan side to within five points of league leaders Real Madrid, who they face at the Nou Camp on 22 April.

Ernest Macia, of public Radio Catalunya, said it was a “historic evening” in Barcelona.

“Messi is exceptional, there will not be another player like him,” said Macia.

“In Barcelona, people are used to successes of the team and of Messi but tonight, with the sight of history, many people will remember the night.

“I’ve heard many cars now on the streets celebrating that Messi has done it.”

Rodriguez played mainly for Barcelona, winning five La Liga championships in 13 years with them.

He was the league’s highest scorer in 1948-49 (28 in 24 games) and topped Barca’s goal charts for seven consecutive seasons.

The forward, who also coached Barcelona in 1963-64, was famous for his ability to score goals from corners.

He scored six goals in 12 appearances for the Spanish national side between 1945 and 1952.

Wolves 0-5 Man Utd

Manchester United extended their lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League to four points after demolishing a hapless Wolves.

Jonny Evans recorded his first United goal, from a corner, before Ronald Zubar saw red for two yellow cards.

That handed the impetus to the visitors with Antonio Valencia scoring on the break and Danny Welbeck tucking in.

Javier Hernandez then headed in and finished Valencia’s cross with Steven Fletcher going closest for Wolves.

The Scotland striker’s headers either side of half-time were all the hosts could muster in a game that might have proved a daunting enough challenge even before Zubar’s dismissal left them a man short with more than half the match remaining.

Wolves have now won once in 14 league games and, having put Terry Connor in charge four games ago to try to lift them out of trouble, they now sit bottom of the table.

This was Connor’s third defeat in four since taking charge and they have conceded 12 goals in their last three games without scoring.

For Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, the emphatic scoreline had the additional benefit of reducing the goal difference between City and themselves to just three goals.

A perfect pick-me-up after Thursday’s Europa League exit, the win means United’s title rivals face Chelsea on Wednesday with a four-point gap to close.

Last February, Wolves beat United at Molineux to end the visitors’ long unbeaten start to the season, and Connor had spoken before the game of aiming to replicate that upset.

If that rallied the troops, the effect lasted only until Evans put Ferguson’s side ahead, whereupon Wolves lost all momentum.

It was a poor goal to concede, Michael Carrick being given plenty of space at the back post from Wayne Rooney’s corner to set up the Northern Ireland defender.

The hosts’ plight was made worse when Zubar followed his booking for a lunge on Rooney on 28 minutes with another yellow card for a similar challenge on Welbeck 12 minutes later.

Ferguson had named Rooney, Welbeck and Hernandez in an attacking line-up and once Wolves were down a goal and a man, the visitors’ attacking trio clearly sensed an excellent opportunity to get on the scoresheet.

Valencia’s goal came from a Wolves corner, Rooney setting clear the Ecuadorian who, with no covering challenge, steered the ball into the corner after a break down the right.

Athletic Bilbao 2-1 Man Utd (agg 5-3) Europa League – Play Offs

Manchester United crashed out of the Europa League in devastating fashion as they were outclassed by Athletic in their last-16 tie in Bilbao.

Iker Muniain hit the post before Fernando Llorente scored a fantastic volley from Fernando Amorebieta’s raking diagonal pass.

Ryan Giggs then headed wide but Oscar de Marcos put further daylight between the sides when he crashed in.

Wayne Rooney scored from 25 yards late on but it was merely a consolation.

It was a fine strike from the United forward to score his 27th goal of the season, but it was only a footnote as a young Athletic team once again posed all sorts of questions for their opponents.

Just as in the Old Trafford game a week ago Marcelo Bielsa’s side pressed all over the pitch and attacked en masse, and in the end Sir Alex Ferguson’s team could not stem the flow.

That it came from a side seventh in La Liga, 33 points behind leaders Real Madrid, perhaps added weight to the argument surrounding the strength of the Premier League challenge in Europe this season.

And only the most churlish of observers would begrudge the Basque team a place in the next round as United ended a disappointing European campaign which failed on two fronts, following their Champions League exit.

With a five-man midfield closing the many gaps that appeared in the first leg, last season’s Champions League finalists had a more solid base from which to attack.

But after Ashley Young, operating on the left, had a close-range shot blocked by the Athletic defence, the hosts began to tease openings from their left flank.

Muniain struck a post on 14 minutes when he was cleverly found by Llorente’s lay-off and De Marcos should have buried the follow up, but skied over from eight yards out.

Llorente then dismissed any worries about that faux pas when he peeled away from Rio Ferdinand and volleyed in Amorebieta’s long diagonal pass.

It was a glorious strike as the 50-yard assist came over his shoulder, and it was only a shame the striker had to be replaced because of injury before the break.

The goal clicked United into a higher gear but some robust Athletic defending limited them to a close-range Giggs header which was deflected over.

As much as Premier League leaders United wanted to make an impression as the game progressed, they were not allowed to.

The pressing, link-up play and tempo that the hosts produced did not give Ferguson’s team any chance of feeding an isolated Rooney up front.

Indeed, Athletic’s status in the game was highlighted when right-back Andoni Iraola danced round Ferdinand and Jonny Evans but shot inches wide.

But the skipper played a part in the second goal when he crossed from the right, and once the ball dropped to De Marcos he smashed past David de Gea.

Markel Susaeta and substitute Gaizka Toquero could have added to the total before Rooney gave United something to cheer as he curled in.

United will now return home to maintain their Premier League challenge, but there is no doubt they received a footballing lesson that will be hard to forget.

Chelsea 4-1 Napoli (agg 5-4) Champions League – Play Offs

Branislav Ivanovic’s extra-time goal sent Chelsea into the Champions League quarter-finals as they completed a superb comeback to beat Napoli at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have been in turmoil since losing 3-1 in the first leg in Naples, with manager Andre Villas-Boas sacked by owner Roman Abramovich after less than 10 months in charge.

Roberto di Matteo assumed control until the end of the season – and oversaw a win of huge significance as the home side overturned that deficit on a night of high drama and emotion.

Di Matteo’s side achieved their first target as goals either side of half-time from Didier Drogba and John Terry gave them the lead they required to move towards a place in the last eight.

Gokhan Inler’s strike had the massed ranks of noisy Napoli supporters in ecstatic mood as he turned the tie in favour of the Serie A outfit, but this was a night when Chelsea’s old guard was not to be denied.

Frank Lampard sent the tie into extra time from the penalty spot with 15 minutes left before Ivanovic’s thumping finish proved to be the decisive moment.

At the final whistle Di Matteo, who had been impassive in his technical area, raced on to the pitch and into the arms of Drogba before moving around the rest of his players with the home fans delivering deafening roars of approval.

Abramovich felt he could wait no longer to dismiss Villas-Boas, even though this crucial game was looming – and he will feel that decision has been given a measure of vindication by the transformation in this Chelsea side.

The elder statesmen delivered as the Londoners showed the passion, character and commitment that was often conspicuous by its absence during Villas-Boas’s brief reign.

And Abramovich can now look towards the latter stages of Europe’s elite tournament with Chelsea as England’s only representatives, ensuring the Premier League avoided the ignominy of being wiped out before the quarter-final stage for the first time since 1996.

The Blues will have been aware of the danger of conceding a goal at any time – and Stamford Bridge was awash with anxiety as they were forced to survive an early siege from Napoli.

Marek Hamsik had a shot blocked by the feet of tumbling home goalkeeper Petr Cech as the Italians played at a pace and tempo Chelsea found almost impossible to contain in the opening exchanges.

Edinson Cavani could only put Christian Maggio’s low cross into the side-netting before Cech saved from Ezequiel Lavezzi and Hamsik again.

The hosts managed to halt some of Napoli’s momentum but it was still totally against the run of play when they went ahead, Drogba twisting and turning to head Ramires’ cross past visiting keeper Morgan de Sanctis.

Chelsea’s enemy was now over-excitement and they almost conceded instantly when Napoli caught them cold on the counter as Cavani pulled another presentable chance across the face of goal.

Di Matteo has decided to lean heavily on his experienced players after succeeding Villas-Boas – and they delivered in style two minutes after the restart as Terry arrived to power home Lampard’s corner.

It was a blow that required a response from Walter Mazzarri’s side and that came when Inler chested down Terry’s headed clearance on the edge of the area before showing great technique to beat Cech with a low half-volley.

As the tension mounted, Chelsea pressed and Napoli started to show real uncertainty under pressure. The break the home side needed came with 15 minutes left as former Liverpool defender Andrea Dossena handled.

German referee Felix Brych pointed to the spot and Lampard stepped up to drill his kick powerfully down the middle.

With time ticking away, the ever-dangerous Lavezzi had Cech scrambling with a dipping shot from distance that landed just over.

The action continued unabated in injury time, Hamsik flashing a wonderful volley narrowly off target and Torres just unable to take advantage from an acute angle after De Sanctis misjudged a long ball.

As extra time began, it was a case of who would blink first and Drogba turned provider seconds before the end of the first period.

The Ivorian’s pull back was fired home in emphatic fashion by Ivanovic to complete the turnaround.

Real Madrid 4-1 CSKA Moscow (agg 5-2) Champions League – Play Offs

Real Madrid strolled into the last eight of the Champions League with an emphatic win over CSKA Moscow.

Gonzalo Higuain tapped in to put Real ahead before Cristiano Ronaldo’s speculative long-range strike put daylight between the sides.

Substitute Karim Benzema made it 3-0, before Zoran Tosic’s stunning strike handed CSKA a consolation.

Ronaldo added a fourth but Xabi Alonso picked up a yellow card that keeps him out of the quarter-final first leg.

No coach has ever won the Champions League with three different clubs but given the astonishing run Real Madrid are on, Jose Mourinho will be confident of making history.

“We played a mature match. It wasn’t anything out of this world but we’re in the quarter-finals,” said Mourinho.

“We suffered more than we should have until the second goal and the game was demanding until the end, but all Champions League games are. Now we’ll take on whoever the draw pairs us with on Friday,” the Portuguese added.

Los Blancos have now won 31 of their last 35 matches in all competitions, finding the net in every one of them – form that makes a La Liga and Champions League double a distinct possibility.

The latest visitors to the cauldron that is the Bernabeu, CSKA Moscow, started well with Seydou Doumbia firing over from 12 yards after Alan Dzagoev picked him out with an incisive through ball.

But Real curbed CSKA’s early enthusiasm when a deserved opener from Higuain, who started ahead Benzema, gave them a 2-1 aggregate lead. The Argentine tapped in from Kaka’s cross from the left after the Brazilian had been picked out by Sami Khedira’s intelligent ball over the CSKA defence.

Madrid went up a gear in the second half and Ronaldo almost made it two when his shot was saved well by goalkeeper Sergei Chepchugov – before a careless lunge by Alonso saw him pick up the yellow card that rules him out of the first leg of the quarter-final.

But that was merely a blip for Real, who doubled their lead on the night through Ronaldo. The forward’s long-range effort bounced in front of Chepchugov and into the net, leaving the Russian red-faced and the Portuguese celebrating.

Benzema then scored within 33 seconds of coming on as a substitute, a record in this season’s Champions League. The Frenchman collected Mesut Ozil’s sublime low cross from the right and, after his initial shot was saved, poked in the rebound.

Zoran Tosic produced a rare moment of brilliance for CSKA – rifling in a long-range effort off the underside of the bar – but it came too late to inspire hope on a night when the Russian side lacked the quality to trouble Real.

Deep into stoppage time Ronaldo tapped in Benzema’s centre to score a fourth – the seventh consecutive game in which he has scored – and seal Real’s 5-2 aggregate progress.

AC-Milan 4 – 0 Arsenal EUROPE: Champions League – Play Offs

Arsenal have suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of AC Milan in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at the San Siro.

Serie A giants Milan made the breakthrough after 15 minutes when former Spurs midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng smashed an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

In a poor first-half attacking display from the Gunners, Laurent Koscielny could only put a tame header at Christian Abbiati in the Milan goal from Robin van Persie’s free kick.

The hosts doubled their lead just before the break when Robinho cushioned his header into the net after good work down the left flank from Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Second Half

Despite bringing on Thierry Henry for the second half, Arsenal found themselves 3-0 down minutes after the break when Robinho hit a low shot past Wojciech Szczesny following Thomas Vermaelen’s slip.

However, Arsene Wenger side’s night was made worse when Ibrahimovic fired in from the penalty spot on 77 minutes after he was tripped in the area by Johan Djourou.

Gunners skipper van Persie had another chance shortly after, but his header forced a low save from Abbiati.

The result leaves Arsenal with the slimmest chance of qualification when they host Milan at the Emirates Stadium for the second leg on Tuesday, March 6.

Barcelona stun Real Madrid in El Clasico, Real Madrid 1-3 Barcelona

FC Barcelona got the league back on track with a thrilling 1-3 comeback win at Santiago Bernebeu. The match started with a disaster as far as Barca were concerened. We went a goal down in the very first minute following a horrendous mistake by Valdes. But this match was about whether Barca’s grit and they dig deep and produced a brilliant comeback. Sanchez equalised in the 30th minute and Xavi and Fabregas scored in the second half to conquer the stadium of Santiago Bernebeu. This is Real Madrid’s first defeat at home and also this looks like their first defeat after going 1-0 up.

This clash had a huge importance as it set the phsycology for the rest of the clashes this season. Many of the pundits would like this victory. Many were arguing that Mourinho’s second season is really when he push things up opponent’s throat. But this one didn’t go according to the script for him. One of the most disappointed football writer would be Sid Lowe from Guardian who predicted a Real Madrid win. He did last season also. So he is officially our lucky charm. Putting to rest all confusion regarding the formation and line-up, Guardiola decided to go with a 4-3-3 formation. David Villa was ommitted from the starting line-up again and Cesc took his position. We had Valdes on the goal; Alves, Pique, Puyol and Abidal formed the defender. The midfield had the Iniesta, Xavi and Busquets. The front trio had Cesc, Messi and Sanchez, with Cesc playing teh false 9 role. Meanwhile Real Madrid went with a 4-3-3 formation, with Casillas, Coentrao, Ramos, Pepe, Marcelo, Xabi Alonso, Diarra, Ozil, Maria, Benzema and Ronaldo.
